WHAT IS DERMATITIS ?
Dermatitis refers to a broad range of inflammatory skin conditions characterized by redness, swelling, itching, and irritation. It is essentially an irritation or inflammation of the skin that can vary in severity, and can present as rashes, blisters, or dry patches. Dermatitis is often caused by external factors such as allergens or irritants, or can stem from internal imbalances in the body. While it is not a single disease, it is commonly used to describe various conditions that affect the skin.
TYPES:
- Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is a chronic, itchy condition often seen in individuals with a family history of allergies or asthma. It typically appears in childhood and can manifest as dry, scaly patches that become inflamed and can sometimes crack or weep. It often affects the face, elbows, and knees. - Contact Dermatitis
Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin comes into contact with an irritant or allergen. It is divided into two main types: irritant contact dermatitis (caused by exposure to chemicals, soaps, or detergents) and allergic contact dermatitis (caused by allergens like poison ivy, nickel, or certain fragrances). - Seborrheic Dermatitis
This type of dermatitis is characterized by flaky, oily, and red skin, often affecting the scalp, face, and areas where the skin is oil-rich. Seborrheic dermatitis can also be associated with dandruff, and it tends to flare up during times of stress or changes in weather. - Nummular Dermatitis
Nummular dermatitis is marked by round or oval patches of irritated skin. It is often itchy and can be triggered by dry skin or sensitivity to certain fabrics or detergents. - Stasis Dermatitis
Stasis dermatitis occurs when blood flow is poor, particularly in the lower legs. It is often seen in individuals with varicose veins or other circulation issues, and it results in swelling, redness, and scaling of the skin.
CAUSES:
- Genetics : A family history of eczema, asthma, or allergies increases the likelihood of developing dermatitis.
- Allergens : Pollen, pet dander, dust mites, mold, or food can all trigger an allergic reaction.
- Irritants : Soaps, detergents, fragrances, and chemicals can cause skin irritation.
- Stress : Emotional stress can lead to flare-ups of dermatitis, particularly in atopic dermatitis.
- Climate : Extreme weather conditions, like cold, dry air, or heat, can trigger or worsen symptoms.
- Infections : Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections can lead to secondary dermatitis, especially when the skin is already compromised.
- Hormonal Changes : Hormonal fluctuations, such as those occurring during pregnancy or menstruation, can contribute to dermatitis flare-ups.
SYMPTOMS:
The symptoms of dermatitis can vary depending on the type and severity of the condition but often include:
- Red, inflamed skin
- Intense itching or burning sensation
- Dry, flaky skin
- Cracked, weeping, or oozing skin
- Blisters or bumps
- Thickened or leathery skin (in chronic cases)
