Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectum and anus that can cause discomfort, pain, and bleeding. They can be internal (inside the rectum) or external (under the skin around the anus).
Symptoms of Piles:
- Bleeding : Bright red blood during or after bowel movements.
- Pain and Discomfort : Especially when sitting or passing stool.
- Itching and Irritation : Around the anal area.
- Swelling : A lump near the anus, which may be tender or painful.
- Mucus Discharge : In some cases, along with a feeling of incomplete evacuation.
Causes
- Chronic constipation or diarrhoea
- Straining during bowel movements
- Sitting for long periods, especially on the toilet
- Low-fibre diet
- Pregnancy (due to increased pressure on veins)
- Obesity
- Aging
Treatment
1. Dietary Changes (High-Fiber Diet)
- Eat more fiber-rich foods : Whole grains, leafy greens, fresh fruits, nuts, and seeds.
- Drink plenty of water (8-10 glasses daily) to prevent constipation.
- Avoid processed foods, spicy foods, and caffeine, which can irritate the digestive tract.
2. Herbal Remedies
- Triphala Powder : A traditional Ayurvedic remedy that promotes digestion and prevents constipation.
- Aloe Vera Gel : Apply externally to reduce inflammation and itching.
- Turmeric : anti-inflammatory properties; mix with warm milk and drink daily.
3. Hydrotherapy – sitz bath,hipbath, full immersion bath, gastro hepatic bath.Cold compress: Apply ice packs wrapped in a cloth to reduce pain and inflammation.
