Diabetes Mellitus is a group of diseases that result in high blood sugar (too much glucose in the blood). This condition arises either because the body doesn’t produce enough insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) or because the cells of the body do not respond properly to insulin.
There are three main types of diabetes mellitus:
1. Type 1 Diabetes
- Cause : An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
- Insulin production : Very little or no insulin is produced.
- Onset : Often occurs in childhood or adolescence.
2. Type 2 Diabetes
- Cause : The body becomes resistant to insulin or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.
- Insulin production : The pancreas may produce insulin, but the cells don’t respond well to it.
- Onset : Usually occurs in adults, but is increasingly seen in children, particularly due to obesity.
3. Gestational Diabetes
- Cause : Develops during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs during pregnancy.
- Insulin production : The pancreas cannot produce enough insulin for the body’s needs during pregnancy.
- Onset : Only during pregnancy (typically after the 24th week).
