Holi 2018: Natural Ways to Take Care of Your Skin, Hair and Nails after Holi!

Rejoice, the festival of colors is here! This is one festival where all rules are put on hand and the child within it set on loose. Playing with colors, gorging on delicious sweets, gulping down glass after glass of thandai and dancing on paan banaras wala pretty much sums up the way most people celebrate Holi in India.

However, before all the fun begins, make sure that your skin, hair and nails are well-protected. You do not want to suffer from any of the after effects that come with playing colors, such as skin irritation or allergies.

Traditionally, Holi was all about natural colors that were made from herbs and flowers. But, those days are gone. Today, the market is flooded with synthetic, cheap colors made from artificial dyes and chemicals. Some of them may also comprise of acids, heavy metals, dangerous alkali and such other harmful substances. Since these chemicals can seriously harm your skin and hair, you need to take certain precautions.

Before you head out to play with colors, make sure to properly oil your entire body. You can use olive oil, coconut oil or vitamin E oil, as per your preference. When oiling, take special care to oil behind your ear, near the fingernails and between finger tips. As for your hair, you can use mustard oil and tie it up. Since Holi color can seep inside your nail bed, you need to paint your nails with the darkest possible shade.

Now that the pre-Holi skin, hair and nail care is taken care of, let’s move on to post-Holi care so that you look your radiant best in no time.

Post-Holi Skin Care

Do not scratch, rub or scrub aggressively: Do not rub or scrub vigorously in order to take off the colors. It is good if you avoid using soap and use a cleaner or a liquid wash instead. One of the best ways to get rid of colors is rubbing lemon wedges on your skin.

Make use of lukewarm water: Use lukewarm water to wash off the colors. Dip your feet and hands in a mixture of rosewater, hydrogen peroxide and warm water. This will act as a cleanser. You can also use warm water to gently wash your face and then, take cotton, dip it into olive oil to remove color.

Create a homemade scrub: Once you have taken a refreshing bath, it is time to create a homemade scrub using natural ingredients. All you have to do is mix some turmeric paste with sandalwood paste, along with some white flour and curd to make a scrub. This scrub is going to help you remove all the stubborn paint from your skin.

Moisturize your skin: Now that you have successfully removed the colors from your skin, apply a moisturizer so that your skin can be prevented from becoming dry and rough.

Post-Holi Nail Care

Use nail polish remover: To scrub out the colors from your nails, you can make use of a nail paint remover. Remember to carefully wash your hand with water and mild soap.

Make sea salt solution: Get lukewarm water and add a bit of sea salt to it. Soak your hand in this water for a few minutes. This mixture is going to help wash out all the extra color.

Post-Holi Hair Care

Use plain water to wash your hair: Before applying any shampoo, wash your hair with plain water. Simply let the water wash off as much color as possible.

Squeeze lemon: Lemon juice is great for restoring the acid-alkaline balance. So, apply it on your scalp and hair.

Shampoo: Shampoo your hair properly. Apply the shampoo and let it remain on your hair and scalp for a few minutes. Thoroughly rinse off the shampoo and apply a good conditioner on your hair.

Curd and fenugreek pack: Mix fenugreek seeds in 4 table spoons of curd, and properly apply it on your scalp. Let the pack remain on your head for thirty minutes and then wash it off carefully.

Apply hair oil: Colors have the tendency of drying out your hair. So, by applying hair oil, you will be able to nourish and keep your hair hydrated.

So, this Holi, do not stop yourself from having fun with colors. Play as much as you want, and then, follow the above-mentioned tips to keep your hair and skin glowing, and your nail paint-free!
